The Reservoir explores memory, motherhood, and inherited trauma through a video (11m 44s loop) and 4 interview recordings (30m 14s total). By inverting the signal path of 4 contact microphones, I created listening points on the glass tank's exterior, allowing interaction with a provided stethoscope. The piece's participatory nature gives viewers control over which interview they hear and when, with varying video and audio loop lengths ensuring each viewer has a unique experience.

The vast reservoir of our unconscious appears to hold not only our traumatic memories, but also the unresolved traumatic experiences of our ancestors. In this shared unconscious, we seem to re-experience fragments of an ancestors memory and declare them as our own

The Turning Of The Leaves

Audio-Visual Installation

3 x Video Projections / Quadrophonic Sound, 30minutes

Exhibited at The Union Chapel, London, 2017 & 2018

The Turning of the Leaves is a meditation on the subject of masculinity with reference to the First World War and the phenomenon of intergenerational trauma. It's named after a ceremony that takes place in Manchester Cathedral, in which a page is turned in the Book of Remembrance on alternate Wednesdays.

Drawing on research, interviews and participation in mens groups, the installation is concerned with the challenges facing men today amidst inherited narratives of power, violence and invulnerability.

Heavier Than Air

Audio-Visual Installation,

1 x Video Projection / Stereo Sound,

Exhibited at The Palace Arts Festival, Poland, 2018

In collaboration with Buster Grey-Jung

Filmed and recorded in India’s Northwestern desert state, Rajasthan. Heavier than Air was shot on 8mm film and draws inspiration from a culture heavily steeped in spirituality and ritual. The title references all the kites in skies of the cities and towns throughout the state. The kites are heavier than air and gain lift from aerodynamic forces, which acted as a visual metaphor for the transcendence through faith. Modern distractions aside, the kids were still out flying kites.

Rubie is a portrait film following artist and musician Rubie Green as they prepare for their album release performance. After just two days of filming, a nationwide COVID-19 lockdown begins, shifting the film into an exploration of Rubie’s identity. The isolation of the lockdown parallels their experience as a trans person, with themes of marginalization and resilience. The accompanying paper in Sonic Scope Journal draws on queer studies to challenge traditional notions of ‘success’ and ‘failure,’ presenting lockdown as a radical, ‘queer’ alternative to heteronormative capitalist society.

Edges of an Urbanised River

Audio-Visual Installation

1 x video projection / Stereo Sound, 13 min

Exhibited at TransArt Festival, Kolkata, 2018

In collaboration with Baismapayam Saha

In 2018, Josh was invited to Kolkata for a 10 day residency. He worked in collaboration with local video artist Baismapayam Saha to create Edges of an Urbanised River. This site-specific A/V installation explores the impacts of globalisation on the rapidly developing city of Kolkata and was exhibited on a boat travelling down the Hooghly River, as part of Kolkata's TransArt Festival.

Special thanks to the good people at Littlei & Culture Monks for providing me with their local knowledge, facilities, support and friendship.
